I've got a piece of Slac on my desk about 9 inches long, a heavy dust collector. Memento from the time when it was being constructed. Its a hefty cutaway of half the tube showing the inside baffles. Anodized copper half tube 3.75" diameter made of 7/32" thick wall, baffles at 1" on center also 7/32" thick, the central hole is about .75 inch diameter.

Magnitudes:

3 - These and below don't register in the cognitive sense.

4 - Have to look around for swaying things to confirm.

5 - These you notice.

6 - These are sharp and cause alarm, makes you pause and wonder if its building up to the big one...

7 - These will make you seek cover. Multiple aftershocks, minor panic, don't think about using the phone.

8 - These will likely toss you around. Definite panic. Significant infrastructural damage. Count fingers watch out for falling buildings. Hope the water system still works. Survival issues take precedence. Water, food, shelter.

9 - We best not go there.
