The great thing about this announcement is that it will be seen by many new people and cause them to give Sandisk a look, and having Lucent associated with Sandisk gives the whole thing even more legitimacy.

Has e.Digital (EDIG) helped SanDisk make the transition from ImageMate to "MusicMate?"

"Also included with each sale will be EPAC encoding software and a CompactFlash card reader/writer external drive for desktop computers."

In February, the company introduced the $99 ImageMate card reader, which connects to the desktop through the printer's parallel port to download stored images at speeds up to 20 times those of serial connections, according to SanDisk. Copyright (c) 1998 CMP Media Inc.

Until there are popular standards, flash and camera providers are likely to create their own links to move data from cameras to PCs. SanDisk last month unveiled the Imagemate reader/writer for its CompactFlash format. The $99 reader lets users download a 10-Mbyte card-which will hold anywhere from 10 to 200 images, depending on their resolution-in about a minute. The system is aimed at desktops, where there is no viable alternative to the low-capacity floppy disk. Copyright (c) 1998 CMP Media Inc.
