Assuming they classify the stock as trading securities on the balance sheet, you're correct, they will in fact report the unrealized gains (losses) directly on the income statement and therefore EPS. I'm suspect they would not do this - it's uncommon - they more likely would be classified as "available-for-sale" securities and therefore unrealized gains would not be a component of EPS but rather a direct entry to shareholders' equity increasing book value.

Either way, they are economically better off because of the gain. What they do with it now is the big question.
