The NYSE recently reported a record surge in margin debt for April. This
accompanied the record highs in the indexes. Margin rose $25.5 billion to
$181.94 billion and is now more than 2% of GDP. I'd love to add on a
portion of home equity loans outstanding, but cannot get a good hold on the
numbers. Can anyone help in this regard?

The first chart is a six-month moving average of changes in total margin
debt as reported by the NYSE. The second chart is total margin debt
adjusted for inflation.

Systemic risk has increased substantially.
