OT - Population problems

In short, Gate's two kids will probably have a greater effect on the worlds resources than a couple hundred Bangaly children.

True, but those Bangalese draw down the global standard of living. (Well, probably only the 180 that survive to be 1 year old will.) I'm gonna pull out the recent Nat'l Geo that discussed this, and then we can continue this conversation. (Probably offline or in another topic though :))

Agricultural and Energy are the 2 main problems with increased population. Energy needs have historically doubled every 20 years since the industrial revolution. Unfortunately, this growth will probably remain high, even if we were able to achieve Zero Population Growth.

Tim

PS: I kind of thought Gates already had 1 kid, but I hadn't seen the news that he had another. Sorry for the confusion on my part!

PPS: As far as pollution goes, the Western world is currently poor, but the 3rd world is bad too. Think South American farmers burning the rain forest so they can create cattle-grazing land. Also, the former republics of the Soviet Union produce tremendous amounts of pollution. The Caspian Sea has become tremendously polluted and over-fished since the Soviet system collapsed. (In that respect, central control was decent.)
