All those back-country survivalists are probably overreacting. Still . . .
I don't know about you, but I'm getting worried about this Y2K thing -- you know, the glitch that will prevent computers from recognizing dates past 1999. Doomsdayers predict haywire electronics will disrupt food delivery, law enforcement, medical care and other essentials. Smile if you like and call me alarmist, but a congressional report says Y2K might trigger a worldwide "crisis" costing $1.5 trillion for fixes to 36 million computer programs in 500 programming languages.
We've all experienced computer glitches. Charles Schwab once credited my brokerage account with an extra $20 million. They easily corrected that error, but can we correct 36 million glitches all at once? (cont)

Venezuela faces $1.5 billion Y2K computer problem

<< Venezuela needs to spend $1.5 billion in an effort to prevent possible computer chaos coinciding with the change to the year 2000, with the nation's electrical system particularly vulnerable, senior officials said on Wednesday.

Presidential Chief of Staff Alfredo Pena said the previous government, which left office in February, made absolutely no preparations for a problem that requires urgent attention.
