Microsoft Corp. opened an online mall yesterday filled with
Canadian retailers, a move that allows it to show off some
proprietary e-commerce technology and sets it up to go head to
head with America Online Inc., cyberspace's biggest landlord.

Microsoft Network (MSN) Canada will have more than 60 Canadian
merchants within its shopping channel, including Club Monaco,
Holt Renfrew, Future Shop, Tilley Endurables, Chapters.ca, and The
Body Shop. AOL Canada, too, has several merchants on its
shopping channel, including Hudson's Bay, Outfitters, Zeller's,
Bid.com, CDPlus, and Chaptersglobe.com.

Both firms are trying to capitalize on what many believe is the next
big revenue model for portal players: transaction fees for bringing
buyers and sellers together.

Microsoft of Redmond, Wash., hopes to make the buying process
for both consumers and retailers easier by managing the security of
online transactions with its Passport service. Passport lets users set
personalization and control access across all of the MSN-branded
sites with a single sign-in, registration, and electronic wallet
services.
