Tony, RE:<<What do you think of companies, like EMC, that proactively nip rumors in the bud, that they know full well are false? Is that over reacting, or should companies turn the other cheek, so to speak, and say nothing?>>

IMO the company should say nothing except in exceedingly rare circumstances. Once you start commenting on rumors, you are almost required to comment on them all. If you don't comment, you give the appearance that the rumor is true if you have established a practice of commenting.

Specifically regarding Intel, I think they handle this situation better than almost anybody. As long as the quarter is proceeding within guidance, they say nothing. The quarterly number may be under or over First Call consensus, which management justifiably ignores. As long as your time horizon is longer than a couple of weeks, then, the rumors can only help you. The price is temporarily low, giving you an opportunity to buy cheaper stock if you choose, and a couple of months from now, the rumors are meaningless.

If your time horizon is less than two weeks, well, rumors are part of the ball game.

Tony, what's perplexing on days like today is that money flows out of INTC and in to companies like HWP which now has a higher PE than Intel while consistently missing estimates the past few years....amazing!

Tony - <What do you think of companies, like EMC, that proactively nip rumors in the bud, that they know full well are false? Is that over reacting, or should companies turn the other cheek, so to speak, and say nothing?>

Tony, I know you know this stuff, but I'll state the obvious anyway :-)

1) 31 of 38 analysts covering the stock rate INTC a buy of a strong buy. Many of the analysts are saying this is a great time to buy. If the analysts can move the stock price, or just the minority can.....

2) This pattern of summertime drops in the stock price seems to be trending towards an annual event. This years drop seems excessive, since to me nothing has fundamentally changed in the outlook since the stock was trading at 72 seemingly a fleeting moment ago. I don't get it either. I blame day trading out of hand, but I really don't understand short term movements in the market with seemingly no change in outlook.

3) I know Intel Exec's some what feel the same level of frustration as you do. It is commented on internally.

4) I get frustrated during periods like this, and yes, in the back of my mind I wonder if something is fundamentally up that I don't know about. Just pre-announce season jitters, I think.

5) You commented on analysts seemingly thinking they have a handle on Intel's business. I have a strong suspicion that one important segment they don't have a handle on is Xeon. I have corresponded with Tad La Fountain (Needham Principle) on the AMD thread about this and if I recollect correctly he did not disagree.

6) One of our beloved competitors seemingly has a propensity to hype its prospects.

As for Intel not responding to most rumors, actually I have found that Intel Exec's often respond to rumors ad hoc during the course of interviews with the press. Also, of course, you can always call Investor Relations anytime.

BTW, I'm increasing my stake in INTC at these levels.

PB

Tony, Re: "Seems like a perfect opportunity right now for Intel to dispel rumors...proactively nip rumors in the bud, that they know full well are false?"

I believe it's better for management to spend their time on the business, rather than rumors.
