Good point. I completely agree and have stated this in one of my long discussions about the idea of on-line distribution itself. I guess the conclusion the discussion was leading to was that some time in the future, the "hard copy" backup will be on some non-spinning media (ie. holographic memory cube). I also agree with Gary Mohilner regarding the co-exist of both spinning & non-spinning media. At least until some revolution in non-spinning media comes along that we are currently unaware of.

DISTRIBUTION REVOLUTION - It begins "A revolution is brewing. MP 3 has united...."
-The cover story in the June, 1999 issue of NewMedia. It's 6 pages in print with a font size of about 9-10 (it's pretty good length).
-discusses the general movement, security aspects, and all sorts of viewpoints regarding MP3 and distribution of music online including many statistics strewn throughout.

I just noticed the author is Christopher Jones. Could this be the Chris Jones several of us e-mail about his incorrect statement in a Wired article suggesting Lucent was teamed up with BMG/Universal (those may not be the correct companies he mixed up)?

Enjoy,

Chris

OT: Speaking of spinning formats, here is a link to a NewMedia article titled "DVD Wars Reach Fever Pitch" which discusses the upcoming releases of several other writable DVD formats.
