Sky Nears 700,000 Subscriber Mark

Sky announced Tuesday that as of March 31 its subscribers totaled more than 695,000 throughout Latin America.

Sky is the digital satellite television service offered by the strategic alliance of Organizacoes Globo, Grupo Televisa, News Corp. and TCI International. Sky currently operates in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Columbia.

NetSat, the company's platform in Brazil, grew 8 percent during the quarter. This was a slowdown in growth, which was attributed to seasonal effects and the devaluation of the Brazilian currency.

Innova, Sky's platform in Mexico, grew 17 percent during the quarter. And Sky's multi-country territory, comprised of Sky Chile and Sky Columbia, grew 35 percent in the first quarter.

Another first quarter milestone for the company was the announcement of its expansion into Argentina through a partnership with Pulicom, a subsidiary of Grupo Telecom de Argentina.
