Rick: We have bought one of everything at the lawfirm I work for--Gateway, Micron, Dell, clones, etc. Just be wary of those on-site warranties. I find that by on-site they mean ME, laying on the floor under the desk in my skirt, cover off the CPU, taking directions over the phone from some bozo who refuses to believe that the hard drive has gone bad or the controller failed, etc. We recently bought some E-machines from cyberian outpost (outpost.com) and they have been fantastic. Inexpensive, free overnight shipping, etc. I ordered one last night at 5:00 and it was there this a.m. by 11:00. (Ye-gads I sound like a salesman--I should be hawking Bett instead of cheap computers). Anyway, once you buy your computer don't look at any ads again, because the thing will be obsolete in a month! Good luck!

rickf,
I just got a 17" monitor this week. Before that, I had to move my screen back and forth to see the full picture on my 14". The new monitor is making my life much easier. FYI. Scoobey

Spend at least $1500, be sure to get a new printer and consider multi-media (like scanner and speakers), get at least a 15" monitor (17" is preferable).

Get Intel chip or an AMD, NOT Cyrix. Get the fastest Pentium II chip out (450 Mhz) or get the best Pentium III you can afford.

At least 32 Meg harddrive, v.90 56kbs modem (consider getting cable modem if you have cable internet service in your area and not too expensive (WAY FAST!!).

Hmmm, what else. Good luck. Check out Best Buy and see if you can get it interest free for a year and make payments.
