"Hutch, do you have a list of S&P 500 member companies?"

No, but it took me 4 minutes to find you one... {I'm getting old}
spglobal.com

Which of the members of the XAU are on the list?
Well a list of the XAU is:
gold-eagle.com
phlx.com
Note: Gold-eagle and PHLX seem to disagree.... so you choose.

PHLX.XAU :
Issue Symb Per
Barrick Gold Corporation ABX 33.12% CDN S&P500
Ashanti Goldfields ASL 4.13%
Battle Mountain Gold Company BMG 3.04% S&P500
Coeur D'Alene Mines Corp. CDE 0.49%
Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold FCX 12.80%
Getchell Gold Corporation GGO 4.30% CDN
Hecla Mining Company HL 0.68%
Homestake Mining Company HM 10.96% S&P500
Newmont Mining Corporation NEM 16.11% S&P500
Placer Dome Inc. PDG 14.37% CDN S&P500

So:
ABX :Barrick Gold Corp.
BMG :Battle Mountain Gold
HM :Homestake Mining
NEM :Newmont Mining
PDG :Placer Dome Inc

"Could the XAU really be far south of here were it not for the impact
of S&P 500 index funds?"

Ohhh very much so. ABX/PDG/NEM/HM make up most of the XAU. And
actually distort the results of the XAU. Consider 77.6% of the XAU is
in the S&P500. I'd have to say your answer would be 100% YES. The S&P
500 index is giving support to the XAU index, and these producers. We
should say "God bless the index players", as they are creating that
asset bubble in all equities, including XAU. I like your question it
was a good one.

I like to look at this chart:
quote.stockwatch.com
and compare it to the XAU chart to see when the pressure is on the
XAU. The XAU is a badly weighted index... favorites to few stocks.

Now for you:
Of the XAU, how many are hedging, and what portion are CDN?
Does thw foreign producers hedging make a difference to price
preformance?

NOTE: I know some of these weighting may have changed May 25/99...
But I wasn't told. :p
