Actually, I share your outside-of-space/time definition. Only late-modern suburban pop theologians and primitive bushmen would try to put god in a 4 dimensional box. But that might be a slur on the speculations of bushmen, who undoubtedly were more sophisticated than 'boomers in these matters. In contrast to Coby's not-always-was contention, eternal was a convenient shorthand.
