Did Compaq and MS try to buy linux.com?

A reader tips us off to a bizarre allegation made in the current issue of ZD UK publication IT Week. The mag claims that Microsoft and Compaq both tried to buy the linux.com domain.

Puzzlingly, IT Week seems to bury this little gem at the bottom of a news in brief item about linux.com going live, under the banner of VA Linux Systems, the current owner.

VA got ownership of the domain earlier this year, and proposes to run it as an independent news and views site. But the company hasn't let on whether or not it came up against Compaq and Microsoft when it was negotiating. Any info, readers?

We certainly wouldn't put it past either of the Evil Empires to think grabbing a key Linux domain would be a good idea. But we'd also guess that somebody in their organisations would be likely to suss that the level of outrage such a move would generate would be the PR own-goal of the century. So they'd back off.

So people, what really happened - anybody know? ®
