AMERICANS - WAKE UP

Stop having time outs and crap like that; have non-stop action that can turn in a second.

Apparently 500 million people around the world were watching it.

I think it will eventually happen...

Don't forget that soccer in the US was re-born only during the time in which Pelé played with the NY Cosmos after he retired from playing in Brazil, in 1975....then retired altogether in 1977.

This marked a renewed and serious effort to popularize the sport...

Here is a brief on US Soccer history.

However....It takes the enthusiasm of a child, and the passion of a madman <g> to really make a go of it...

And now, only within the last generation, the expression "soccer mom" has been born... What this means is that THOUSANDS of children have been brought up with soccer in their minds and feet, and NO American Football, or Basketball, or, (the mind crippling Base-ball, as equally crippling as its English counter-part, CRICKET). <g>

This in time, (I will say, within the next 10 - 15 years), you will have a very competitive US Soccer team...

To the point that we all may be sorry we ever wished the US would become enthusiastic about soccer. They have tremendous resources, their mind has simply not been put to the task.

But the new battalion of soccer children who have grown up with the sport is the real start, as athletes, they are as good as the best... they just need to become.... more refined and skilled in it.

As for the TV coverage, I agree... they need to understand that soccer is made of two 45 minutes halves (plus some), and NO INTERRUPTION with damned hamburger/Beers/Cars advertising or whatever.

Until they understand that, it is very possible that the sport will be stunned in its popularity... I doubt that the sport would ever be modified... They'd better NOT do so.

There is hope.... in addition, the Hispanic population is growing so fast, (particularly in the Western US), that soon, it will become an even more significant % of the population... soccer will become easier to introduce and popularize.

I wonder if that is what they mean by the "Californication" of things" <g>
