Inktomi Launches European Search Operations

Inktomi Expands Global Reach of Private-Label Portal Services; Four New European
Customers Sign on for European-centric Search Capabilities

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 1999-- Inktomi Corporation (Nasdaq:INKT - news), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure
software, today announced the launch of its European search operations.

Four new European search customers including LineOne (a venture between BT and United News and Media), Dagens Nyheter, Hollinger Digital (UK Max),
and Telefonica have signed agreements to integrate Inktomi's European search services into their online offerings. The European operations of the Inktomi
Search Engine, hosted in the UK by BT, provide localized European search coverage within a highly customizable platform enabling portals and destination
sites to integrate their own data and communities to build unique online services.

Inktomi's European customers will also have access to sophisticated real-time language translation services through Inktomi's partnership with WorldBlaze.

''Inktomi's mission is to provide software infrastructure that powers the major Internet companies worldwide,'' said David Peterschmidt, CEO and president of
Inktomi. ''The combination of our global search coverage and deep technology uniquely positions Inktomi to power the exploding growth of the ISP and portal
markets in Europe.''

''Our mission at LineOne is to become the UK's best content service for families, and providing the best search capabilities is key to keeping our customers
happy and online,'' said Ajay Chowdhury, managing director of LineOne. ''Inktomi's powerful and flexible search platform will provide us unparalleled
opportunities to build services that delight our users and expand our business opportunities.''

The European version of the award-winning Inktomi Search Engine, planned for integration into partner sites over the coming weeks, will initially offer access
to approximately 50 million documents collected and indexed from popular European and global web sites. Portal customers will also have local access to
Inktomi's broad suite of customizable search services, as well as access to Inktomi's U.S.-based search indexes for combined search coverage of over 150
million Web pages.

In order to enable innovation and competitive differentiation for its customers, Inktomi has built a range of customizable search capabilities. Dedicated Search
Clusters allow partners to build custom searches of any data. For example, portals can integrate millions of pages of their own content or specified third-party
content into the search experience, and the data can be refreshed daily or hourly.

Custom Data Blending allows partners to integrate their own data sets and data filters into Inktomi's local and global search databases.

Universal Search capabilities allow portals to blend multiple data sources such as stock ticker data, near real-time news services, company data, communities,
custom data sources, and integrated third party services such as Centraal RealNames and WorldBlaze real time language translation services, to provide a
comprehensive and ''sticky'' service for users.

Inktomi's new European search customers include:

LineOne is the only British online service provider to offer free Internet access and a full range (1.8 million pages) of free content. Since launching free access
in March, LineOne has been attracting new users at the rate of 10,000 per week and now has over 240,000 registered members. Inktomi's search engine will
power the site.

Dagens Nyheter is the largest daily Swedish morning paper. Its web site, dn.se, is one of the most popular in Sweden. Dagens Nyheter is now developing and
expanding its Web site further in the company's efforts to strengthen its position on the Internet. Inktomi, with its search technology, will be the search engine
that powers the site (http://www.dn.se).

Hollinger Digital, the new media management and investment arm of Hollinger International, will incorporate Inktomi's search technology into UKMax, the new
UK-specific portal dedicated to news and information from across the country (http://www.ukmax.com).

Telefonica seeks to take the lead in an emerging market for the management of Internet access, services and content provision, both as a portal and in
combination with access services. Telefonica in the first quarter of 1999 signed an agreement to buy Ole!, the largest Spanish language Internet portal. Inktomi
has been selected by Telefonica as the search engine provider for the Ole! Portal.

The launch of Inktomi's European search cluster follows the announcement on 10 Feb. 1999, that Inktomi and British Telecommunications have formed a
strategic alliance through which BT would host Inktomi's first European search cluster, and would also use and have the rights to sales and distribution of
Inktomi search services as part of its Internet solution portfolio. Inktomi's previously announced European customers include chello broadband, ComBus's
Swisssearch.com, and Grolier in France.
