Gustave,

Very astute post. And it is one of the reasons that this seemingly insignificant region of Europe portends so much danger for European stability.

Nationalism ignores the economic reality of the continent. It becomes the conduit to refight ancient conflicts and NEVER seek to make progress towards ethnic tolerance.

You can't unite an entire continent economically without ALL sides being willing to put their ethnic pride and nationalism in the closet.

Personally, I, like many Americans, am sick of being the country that has to bang heads together, expending our financial and military treasure fighting someone's wars. But then I look at what the future repercussions could be of not acting and the more greivous loss of life and treasure that could be incurred, and I swallow hard and bite my lip.

The only other alternative is to leave the rest of the world to their own devices and mind our own soveriegn business, the result of which being that these nations wind up reliving their history of perpetrating massive wars against one another.

What is more moral; permitting dictators and despots to kill and ethnically their less well-armed neighbors?? Or should we take a leadership role in pushing our major trading ally, Europe, to deal with their nationalistic Mr. Hyde??

Why people like DoubleD, JBL, and rrman can't figure out what's at stake here is beyond me, but I guess it is just a matter of perspective, or denial.

Regards,

Ron
