TraderEd,

WOW, you bought your first shares of EMC @ $5? that's great! i'm just getting started in individuals. i'm been a mutual fund investor for about five years now, but i'm realizing that with a little hard work and common sense, one can do just as well on their own and save on taxes in the process. i'm glad my money is in an IRA. that way i don't have to worry about all of the tax consequences. if i did, i'd be a different type of investor.

EMC's best percentage gain days may be behind it, but i still expect it to outperform the index and forge ahead. i've done my homework on the stock and like it a great deal, however, if there's ever a reason to trade out i won't hesitate to pull the trigger. i plan on writing covered calls in the meantime for a little extra income.

i appreciate your candid response. it would be nice if we all could just "get along" as they say. EMC is a good stock for BOTH daytraders and LT shareholders alike.

best wishes,
michael

<<<<<<<<<Now compared that to my long term EMC gain of $100/.21 = 47,620 percent over 8 years minus 20 per cent for taxes, yielding 38,000 percent gain for the eight years or an average of of over 4,500 per cent per year (non compounded).>>>>>>>>>

I made an error. I should have used the post split price. Above paragraph should read as follows:

Now compared that to my long term EMC gain of $50/.21 = 23,810 percent over 8 years minus 20 per cent for taxes, yielding 19,000 percent gain for the eight years or an average of of over 2,250 per cent per year (non compounded).

Sorry about that, but my point is still the same. You can make serious money by buying and holding, assuming you buy and hold the right one. Emc is one of the right ones.

TraderED,

Amen to that.
All this bickering and bragging is why I do not check this thread as often as I used to. I used to like it better 4 years ago when those who posted in this thread were more interested in EMC's prospects.

I believe in buying and holding. I bought 95% of the shares I own (over 30,000 with the latest split) four years ago at a split adjusted cost basis of 4 3/4. I am not bragging I am simply trying to make a point. One should stick with whatever works for you, whether is buy/hold or trade or like you said a little of both.

BTW I also bought a bunch of WCOM four years ago at 13 and have no plans to sell either EMC or WCOM in the near future.
