I understand ...

I *am* starting to examine what Real has held onto as their edge. Since the last release of the RealPlayer (G2) they moved from a proprietary RDP transport protocol to IETF standard RTSP/RTP ... this means that *anyone* can now create a server that will support the G2 client.

Now they are starting to support more content encoded in open standards formats. MP3, etc.

The core of a play like this then seems to fall to the amount of content encoded and available in their format. The .RM format of encoded streams, and the SureStream encoding, appear to be a proprietary technology that Real still owns. But it appears that others will be able to serve up the .RM format ... Apple for example ... and the Linux port of the Apple Streaming Server.

I have been in Real long ... for a long time ... but I'm looking for what will be their next moves. I'm very impressed with Glaser so far ...
