Camping this weekend. Fishing & swimming. We do lots of non-electronic games, just not a night of it. Plus our kids get read two stories each every night. But, IMHO, a working knowledge of the confuser is a must before high school age nowadays. I do not mean how to use windows 98 or 2000 either. I mean how to get the dang thing to work outside canned programs, how to mechanically add hardware, understand the software that makes it all work.

By having such easy access to my computer and watching me work on it my kids are very familiar with a computer. I think this is a must. My 3 yr old opens the CD drawer, puts in programs and starts them. This is a good thing. They can't really hurt anything and if they do screw something up, it is a perfect time to show them how to fix it and how it got screwed up!

(How did we get so far OT LOL!!)

OT - Camping/outdoors life are the best ways to teach kids self reliance, independence, and that separation from electronics are okay in life. There's a certain amount of fear in a child that being away from home in the wilderness can lead to danger. Teaching them otherwise is so important. It builds the confidence level.

Jed Smith wilderness this summer, after a week in the eastern sierras reeling in some rainbow. Taking my younger brother for his first trip. No video games, few showers, late nights around the fire with bears creeping in the shadows...gotta love it.
