andy, RE: can you buy LEAPS in your IRA? My broker-Waterhouse- does not allow. I have previously pleaded with them all the way up the chain of command to no avail.

It is legal to buy LEAPS (or any other options for that matter) in an IRA. Some firms just don't permit it for their own internal purposes. If you're dead set on buying LEAPS, I'm pretty sure both Fidelity and Schwab allow it.
