I thought your initial point was that Amazon was not a valid retail portal. I'm a little dubious on portals myself. But for example take yahoo, when was the last time anybody clicked on an ad in yahoo. I never do it - (which btw doesn't mean their ads are not successful). But when I am reading yahoo msg boards or weather or tv or whatever I am not in a mode to buy. Otoh when I access the amazon site I am. I contend that a "special" ad for drugstore.com is much more effective from another retail site than from a general use site. I'm just drawing this conclusion from my own patterns.

Recently they had the 1¢ specials for drugstore.com and that was hugely successful
apparently (a lot of items were sold out).

Sure, it's clear they're successful in loss-leaders. I got some flyers in San Francisco for
$5 off any AMZN book. I got a bunch of them. The people handing them out didn't care
if they gave me one or 20.

Everyone in my family bought the .01 deal. The .01 deal only so now we are counted as customers. We sure have a lot of contact lense cleaner for an excellent price<G>
