advantage more than another month or two. >

You dismiss the leaders far more easily than I or most would. Let me ask you then, who do you favor?

increasingly hard for the leaders to defend their position as
technology becomes universal and dirt cheap.

I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, since services like Yahoo! are free to users, it seems like it would be awfully hard to dislodge them. I use Yahoo solely for e-mail lists and quick-and-dirty stock watchlists, and you would have to pay me a hundred bucks or so before I would go to the trouble of switching to another portal. (In a similar vein, I have pretty much settled on a few sites for inexpensive items like books and CDs, while I have absolutely no retail loyalty when it comes to bigger ticket items like branded computer equipment.) On the other hand, I had expected the leaders to be more dominant by now. Some of the offline media are getting off the floor and figuring out how to compete without cannibalizing their main businesses. I suspect that web valuations have concentrated the minds of the competition, while scrambling the minds of web employees.
