Israel Delays Decision on Planes

JERUSALEM (AP) - A decision on a $2.5 billion combat plane contract will be delayed until Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak takes office, an aide and a Defense Ministry source said Thursday.

The Israeli air force has recommended that Lockheed Martin Corp.'s (NYSE:LMT - news) less expensive F-16 dominate the order over Boeing Co.'s F-15. But Barak - a former Israeli military chief who also will serve as defense minister - wants his government to make the decision, his aide said.

Barak doesn't necessarily oppose the air force recommendation, and may reach the same conclusion himself, the aide said.

But the Defense Ministry source said Barak apparently does take issue with the recommendation, otherwise the decision wouldn't have been put off. Both spoke on condition their names not be used.

Earlier Thursday, the Defense Ministry asked the Pentagon to urge Lockheed Martin and Boeing to give Israel two to three more weeks to make its decision, the ministry source said. A decision had been due Tuesday.
