Barb - (...yesterday I closed a DELL put position at a nice profit. At the time the spread was 3/4 of a point, and I would have had to have given up 1/4 point to sell them, as they were deep in the money Junes. So I decided to buy the stock, and exercise the option...)

If memory serves, the option books used to talk about avoiding stock commissions. Unless my situation is unique, these days stocks have both lower commissions and lower spreads than options, so I find myself taking assignments at expiration on all or part of short strangles almost every month.

Barb, I have had to exercise puts in the past. It is somehow more satisfying to actually PUT it to them. <g>
