Globe says Biomira on target ramping up cancer study Biomira Inc BRA Shares issued 44,000,000 May 27 close $5.70 Fri 28 May 99 In the News The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, May 28, edition that Biomira has enrolled more than 10 per cent of the patients it requires for an international phase III clinical study of its cancer vaccine Theratope. The Globe's Leonard Zehr writes that Biomira says 101 women with advanced breast cancer have joined the study, which began in December and is scheduled to take four years. Biomira says it's on target ramping up the study. The clinical trial will study 900 women at 75 sites worldwide, making it the largest ever for advanced breast cancer. Biomira plans to analyze interim data from the phase III study at the end of 2000. Biomira and Chiron Corp. of Emeryville, Calif., are sharing costs of the $30-million phase III trial, which precedes an application for market approval. Theratope already has been tested in more 350 patients in phase I and II trials in Canada, the United States and Britain. In one study, patients treated with Theratope had a median survival rate of 26.5 months, compared with 9.2 months for patients in a control group.
