Yahoo! Acquires Encompass
In Deal Valued at $130 Million
Dow Jones Newswires

Yahoo! Inc. said Thursday that it has acquired Web-software developer Encompass Inc. in a deal valued at $130 million that will help Yahoo better compete with the slew of Internet offerings from rivals America Online Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Privately held Encompass offers a browser that is an alternative to the two leading products for surfing the Web: Navigator, which is made by AOL's Netscape unit, and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Company Profile: Yahoo!

Encompass's software comes preloaded on personal computers made by Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Acer Inc. The browser can be used instead of Explorer, which is a part of Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Users of the software made by Atlanta's Encompass can connect to a variety of Internet-service providers. Geared toward first-time Internet users, Encompass's software is made for easy browsing and e-mail and also provides a step-by-step Internet tutorial.

During the set-up process, Encompass gets product-registration information that is shared with its partners, whether they are the makers of the hardware or software used or the Internet-service provider. This allows Encompass's partners to collect valuable demographic information about their customers.

Encompass and Yahoo have been partners in an array of distribution agreements for more than a year.
