I got such a warm feeling browsing some of my OLD books and papers. It seemed appropriate for a Memorial weekend, to recall those who went before, preparing the way for us, we have a lot to live up to. Some of the quotes that seemed appropriate to this thread; “The wealth of nations lies not in material resources, but in the hearts and minds of free men” Warren Brooks, from his 1982 book “The Economy in Mind”. “Socialism promised equality among men, but delivered equality of servitude - to the state”. F.A.Hayek, from his 1944 book, “The Road to Serfdom”. “All of the darkness in the world, cannot overcome the light of a single candle.” Leonard Read - Founder - Foundation for Economic Education (as told to George Roach, President - Hillsdale College) “Whom the Gods would destroy, they first subsidize.” George Roach - President - Hillsdale College “... they knew full well that responsibility was the price of freedom.”; “History has taught us that freedom cannot long survive unless it is based on moral foundations.” Margaret Thatcher - Former Prime Minister, Great Britain She suggests we can discover (and should reflect on) the moral foundations for democracy, law, and capitalism. “Our Constitution was designed for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.” John Adams, second president of the United States “I sought for the greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and boundless forests - and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning - and it was not there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless constitution - and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” Alexis de Tocqueville - from his 1840 book “Democracy in America” “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible” George Washington “So great is my veneration of the Bible, that the earlier my children begin to read it, the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society.” John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States “That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests” Andrew Jackson, president of the United States “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the saviour of the world is communicated to us through this book.”; “Take all of this book on reason that you can, and the balance on faith, and you will live and die a happier and better man.” Abraham Lincoln “Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.” Thomas Jefferson
