Bill, I honestly think it is more a function of the big money trying to stampede the ignorati dipsters into the crap they already own too much of, rather than trying to goose prices temporarily for quarter's end. After all, a couple of three points on Compaq or Intel are not going to make things much better when you get called on the carpet for goofing off last quarter. The cowboys (funds) shooting their guns behind the herd has caused a mild stampede so far this morning. Once they figure out that bullets cost more than beef, they will have to cool it for awhile.

Since the start of the year, this market has been much more schizo than it has been in years. Yes, previously there was a division between the haves (nifty techies and internuts, financials and dopers) and have nots (90% of the stocks). But that division held pretty solidly for years. Now, it is cyclicals one day, techies the next, followed by the drug pushers on the third day and a rally in oils on the fourth. It is like the great unwashed does not have enough money to keep all these balls in the air at the same time, so they have to juggle them. Anyone else see that marginal banana peel on the ground in front of the juggler? <g>
