INTERNET--(esecurities.W)--June 2, 1999 - NewKidCo As World's Non-Violent Videogames Poster Child?"AMA Speaks out Against Violent Video Games" "...The American Medical Association issued a release today speaking out against violent forms of entertainment media, including video games. The release read as follows: “The American Medical Association joins with President Clinton in speaking out against the excessive portrayal of violence in the entertainment industry, including movies, videos, computer games, and music. Violence is a public health epidemic fed by a multitude of factors. While not the only factor, the link between media violence and real-life violence has been proven by science time and again. We must take steps now to make it right. The AMA has distributed The Physicians Guide to Media Violence to more than 60,000 physicians and their patients. The guidelines are designed to educate and empower physicians and their patients about the harmful effects of media violence, and to help physicians become a valued community resource on this epidemic. The AMA applauds the President's call for a nationwide effort to reduce youth violence and for a comprehensive study of the extent to which the marketing of videos, movies, computer games, and music affect child behavior and child violence. We look forward to working with the President and with the patient and industry organizations represented at the White House today to address the critical issues surrounding youth violence.” The AMA's release was a result of a speech given by President Clinton yesterday in which he requested the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate how interactive entertainment media is marketed..."
