Elmer,

" As for Celeron/PII and K6-2 yields/binsplits, no exact numbers are public, but I
remember the time when the Japanese were the envy of the Semiconductor industry.
Today Intel's yields/binsplits make the Japanese cry."

Memories and processors are not quite apples-to-apples comparision but I will give you one data point.

From what I hear, some of the pure fab guys, and not Intel, have the lowest cost structure in the industry now. Catch anyone who goes to FSA meetings and they will tell you that until about a year back Intel used to be surprised with yields and costs from the Taiwanese fabs to the point of accusing them liars.

Anyone who has been to FSA or other process oriented Industry gatherings care to shed some light?

Chuck
