Of course, IA-64 starts out in the server world where a number of different architectures have had success. MDR's projection is for IA-64 to move to desktop three years after entering the server market. (mid 2000 to mid-2003.) A lot of sw can be ported in three years. In fact, I hear that a lot has been ported already.
