It is my understanding if you have your shares in a margin account they may be used for shorting purposes. If the shares are held in a cash account, no one can use them for shorting. Usually BB stocks are not subject to shorting by American Brokers. Canadian Brokers will allow shorting if you have approximately $200,000 Canadian in your account. Market Makers can and from time to time will short a stock and if you have your account with an MM rather than a Broker you run the potential they can use your shares against you.
Complaining will not help, just make sure your shares are in the proper type of account for your purposes.

Regards,
Roy
