Saturn, RE: Intel is weak because of the nervousness caused by the K-7 introduction hype, High Tech Stock Weakness, and the invariable rumors about lower than expected earnings for Intel which circulate a month before the quarter end.

Intel is weak because most of the buy and sell side on Wall St. believes that PC sales may have the most vulnerability to Y2K. I quote from a PaineWebber summary from a Y2K dinner they hosted last night (The quote refers specifically to the business market, in contrast to the booming consumer segment):

The one area of significant spending slowdown is in PCs. The CTO [a telecomm CTO that was in attendance at the dinner] indicated that Y2K issues led management to upgrade many PCs ahead of normal replacement cycle in 1998 and 1999, which will lead to slower PC spending in 2000.

Compared to that issue, AMD and the quarterly rumors are just rocks in Intel's shoe.
