Here's some news from Japan. It looks like CDMA is booming there. --Jim DJ NTT DoCoMo Tops 220,000 Users For New Cellular Service TOKYO -- The world's largest mobile phone company, NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (J.NTX or 9437), said Thursday that subscribers to its i-mode cellular phone services topped 220,000 in the first three months of sales. I-mode, which requires a special handset, offers mobile Internet connection for electronic mail and online credit and banking services as well as regular phone services. A spokesman for the company, commonly known as NTT DoCoMo, said that the average retail price for i-mode handsets is Y20,000-Y30,000. NTT DoCoMo said that "it expects i-mode's customer base to continue growing at an accelerated rate, to possibly as many as three million by the end of March 2000." Commenting on these figures, Kate Lye, an analyst with Warburg Dillon Reed, said "these numbers are extremely strong, especially since only one handset model was available for the first two months of sales". Four models have now been released. "The sales forecast for i-mode offers substantial upside for NTT DoCoMo's earnings" Lye added. This is because users of i-mode are expected to run up monthly bills that are about Y1,000 per month higher than users of conventional mobile phone handsets. This report comes hot on the heels of earnings figures released by NTT DoCoMo Tuesday showing record revenue and profits for the fiscal year ended March 31. NTT DoCoMo's chief rivals in the mobile phone area, DDI Corp. (J.DDD) and Nippon Ido Tsushin Corp., also said Thursday that subscribers to their jointly developed CDMAOne cellular service reached one million on May 26.
