ed,

re: .the "cloud" was an interesting analogy of the future...i took this as the computing being done in the "cloud", not the desk top..

1. Normal representation of "the network" on overheads is a "cloud", especially when being drawn by those who aren't network engineers.

2. I formed the impression that Andy G sees computing and communicating converging right within the home.

In other words, the current home PC or the desktop PC would evolve to a device with more communication capability than seen in today's modem or e/net card equipped device. I don't see this as being any different than the vision that the home PC will evolve into home server which is also used as a home PC.

We'll probably see the answer sooner than we expect. And, by that time Dell will be a much more valuable company.

FWIW,
Ian.

the perception that dell not for consumers...that's in spite of all the new t.v. and print advertising toward consumers--and entire back page of NY Times every Thursday in their circuits section--all geared to consumer. Apparently it's not enough

OT - wireless trend - a shameless plug. This thread informed
me about netp, so I'll return the favor here with RFMD - (which
I learned about in a recent SmartMoney article on the 'next'
great tech stocks, which spoke about long, long-term holdings
like Dell, how well they've done, and what some of the next
great long-term holdings might be).

If interested in Wireless, and investing in that trend,
RFMD is a great choice (I own some). They make the
chips that send/receive that wireless signal - in cell
phones, wireless lans, etc. Pretty much all their product
line is "chips to make wireless stuff work". They have
an exclusive and perpetual license on some of their technology
from TRW, they have a deal w/ IBM on manufacturing of chips,
and have a large customer list - Nokia, etc.

They have exceeded analysts's quarterly estimates by
25% - 75% in each of the last 4 quarters (see link) and
earnings estimates keep getting raised:
