Gerald via lee (OT OT OT) I'm sorry it's taken me a couple days to respond, but I've been sleeping and resting after my long week. But gerald, it sounds like you have just as much of a connection to mahler as I do because you have listened a lot. Mahler's ninth is an amazing work - the 1st movement is non-stop deep drama but the middle movements are playful and reminiscent (to me) of stravinsky. The last movement ends with only violins, violas and cellos playing pianissisimo (very very soft) and very slow, which is really hard to do because it requires lots of control. Both nites, my mute popped off in the quietest part - I guess I need to get a new mute - the 1st nite I put it back on, but the second nite I was afraid to put it back on because I didn't want to make any noice so I played the ending just barely touching the string. It is an exhausting piece to play - 90 minutes straight music and by the end of the second performance, I was totally cooked, having done childrens concerts every morning too. The critic for the L.A. Times gave it a great review and the audience gave us a standing ovation, so I guess it went well. The funny thing is that the conductor is really terrible and the critic gave him so much of the credit for the performance, but really the musicians play well despite him. It was extremely frustrating because he spends so much time talking that we don't get to play enough and the way musicians learn music is by playing it, not by having someone talk to them about it. You won't believe this, but we sightread the last movement the nite before the performance and were putting our bowings in. We were like "I can't believe we're performing this tomorrow nite." I hate to disappoint you, but just because I've played a couple of mahler symphonies, I don't feel like that gives me any strong connection to mahler, anymore than you have developed by listening. In fact, you might be connecting more than me, because I am sitting there in the back of the viola section concentrating on trying to play my part right. The thing is, that this is my job, so I probably don't enjoy it as much as you do. Emily
