I would say I am wondering out loud also.
I am trying to discern the significance of the much discussed and only recently disclosed trial endpoint of 35. As discussed here often (by you and others) this trial design is unique, and XOMA encountered significant difficulties finding patients meeting trial criteria.

The 62 deaths mentioned at the annual meeting are unfortunate and individually relevant. I am just trying to determine for my own analysis whether they are statistically relevant. I am trying to understand the likelihood that a parent would not enroll in the trial, and I think that depends on how the enrollment disclosure process occurs of which I have a limited understanding.

With regards to your question regard what parents would say when faced with a horrific decision of participating in a trial that only accepts patients with a 10% to 50% chance of dying, my answer as a father would depend on what I was told about the drug. If, as you say it was disclosed to me as naturally occurring in the body and been previously tested on over 1,600 with no harmful results detected, then I would say YES, YES, YES. But if no information was supplied except legal disclaimers and the statement that "some die" then I would be hesitant to enroll in the trial.

In the latter case I think there would a significant number of trial eligible children who were not enrolled AND survived and therefore the 62 would have less relevance to my analysis, in my opinion.
