IDC Forecasts Network Appliance as Industry's Leading Network Attach Storage Vendor
Worldwide Network Attached Storage (NAS) Market Opportunity To Exceed $5.5 Billion By 2003
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 1999-- Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), a leader in enterprise data management solutions, unveiled market research data that reaffirms the company's leadership position in the Network Attached Storage (NAS) file serving market.

According to Framingham-based International Data Corporation's latest published 1999 Worldwide Disk-Based Network Attached Storage Market Opportunity (IDC No. B99S2123), Network Appliance ranked number one in NAS revenue with 41% of the overall market share for 1998. The report projects the NAS market to grow in excess of 55% per year through 2003. The IDC forecast information was based on IDC supplier and end-user primary research and interviews.

''NAS is a storage solution that delivers superior benefits to customers seeking to manage or consolidate their expanding enterprise and PC-based storage requirements,'' said Robert Gray, Research Director of Storage Systems research at International Data Corporation. ''Network Appliance's market leadership is the result of their ability to meet customer needs for storage appliances, called 'filers,' with enterprise software management tools that differentiate Network Appliance from their competitors.''

''Today, customers clearly want a choice in managing their data, and Network Appliance is recognizing that opportunity by delivering the price/performance benefits and scalability of our NAS and storage networking expertise,'' said Tom Mendoza, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Network Appliance, Inc. ''Our performance in key enterprise, Internet and database markets in the last year helped us maintain our market leadership.''

NAS defines an open architecture for managing and consolidating data storage operations in today's corporate and enterprise networks. NAS leverages several industry-standard protocols and technologies: TCP/IP to transmit data over a network; Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed connections to the network; and Fibre Channel for Gigabit speed storage interconnections.

NAS architectures are designed to accelerate application performance, giving users shared data access in heterogeneous environments. NAS enables administrators to consolidate storage from multiple desktop and server systems into a centrally managed pool of data.

Defining Network Appliance Leadership

Network Appliance pioneered the storage appliance in 1992 with the introduction of the industry's first ''filer.'' Since then, the company has continued to extend and maintain a growing share of the PC server, midrange and enterprise storage systems market.

In its fiscal year 1999, Network Appliance reported revenues of $289.4 million, an increase of 74% over last year. Network Appliance continues to strengthen its technology and market position through key OEM agreements, strategic alliances and industry partnerships with leading companies in the marketplace.
