dog <We saw Gerstner, Pfeiffer and Platt start the mantra - they were already shifting their own businesses away from PCs and knew they would have weak PC growth so why not make that a positive? >

CPQ et al freely admit they are shifting. But they are shifting because of the thin margins, created primarily by competition from the direct sellers. The mantra, then, falls on Dell. CPQ, IBM, HWP et all have PC margins which, frankly, suck. Dell's margin, conversely have allowed continued steamboating. Since Dell's margins have flushed Dell with cash, the success factor feeds on itself and Dell is able to address ever increasing innovations MUCH quicker than either CPQ or HWP without experiencing abnormal debt (as CPQ did in the Digital takeover). Thin margins wreak havoc mostly on plans for R&D and future innovation. Dell can financially afford to choose their time to inform investors of new paths.

rude..thanks, wasn't it "mikey" who said, (paraphrase) turn your competitors strength into a weakness...."direct from dell"

ya nailed it dog..what i've been trying to say for weeks, has nothing to do with the current state of dell...one thing to conquer, but not to decimate, for there are no spoils to savor....

dell, gtw, aapl....only players, who want to play, left in the game...perhaps good for dell, not so good for stock appreciation..

i don't impress easily (present company excluded, of course)...but every time i hear grove speak, i tend to be amazed at the acumen he has of such varied things....and how he can articulate on an "everyman's" level

they are all, except "mikey", "ted", and "steve", looking to the "backbone" of the internet, not just self serving e-commerce, as the future.....why are the aforementioned, laid back "young lions" resistant to change...do they want to battle until only one is left standing in the white box arena...meanwhile the "old school" is pillaging the town......
