Miners get chance to shine on Net

Deutsche Bank Securities is giving diamond miners a chance to sparkle on the Internet.

Next week, the investment dealer is hosting one of the first virtual conferences, a Web gathering of eight domestic and foreign diamond mining companies. The event capitalizes on the fact that the Ekati mine has just begun producing Canada's first diamonds.

For mining executives, institutional investors and analysts, the on-line format turns the usual two-day grind of attending a conference into a simple matter of logging on to a desktop computer for 45 minutes.

While there's always going to be a role for face-to-face meetings, Deutsche is finding that the Internet provides a handy way to unite mining CEOs and investors who are scattered around the globe. In February, the dealer staged the first of these virtual conferences with 13 gold companies and drew the interest of 75 institutions. A post-mortem showed the concept won a thumbs up from time-pressed investors.

While everyone saves time, going on the Internet doesn't save the dealer any money. Deutsche executives say there's not much difference between the cost of setting up their Web site and renting a hotel conference room for two days. Toronto-based McInerney & Co. supplied the technical expertise.

When they log on to Deutsche's Web site (you need a user name, and the address is db.com ) virtual conferences attendees will be greeted by a series of slides provided by the mining company, backed by reports from the dealer. In addition, there's commentary over the phone from company executives and analysts -- Deutsche's Canadian diamond team is made up of analysts Don MacLean and George Albino, with time for questions at the end of the call. Post-conference, presentations remain archived on the Web site.

The lineup for the three-day conference that starts June 1 takes in Dia Met Minerals, Winspear Resources, Trans Hex International, Aber Resources, Mountain Province Mining, Ashton Mining and SouthernEra Resources, along with South Africa's De Beers.
Internationally, Deutsche Bank is about to dramatically ramp up the credit side of its Toronto operation through integration with Bankers Trust, a union that recently received U.S. regulatory approval.
