Avnet changes tune on IP plan, sticks with LSI
Electronic Buyers' News - May 24, 1999

Silicon Valley- Just two weeks after it announced plans to launch a
program to offer extensive ASIC design services to its customers,
Avnet Inc. has suddenly scaled back the project.

Avnet, the world's second-largest electronics distributor, had said it
would license IP cores from leading IC makers, offer its own design
services, and coordinate manufacturing with LSI Logic Corp., its
longtime ASIC supplier. The cores were to come from companies
including Motorola Inc. and Philips Semiconductors. In addition, Avnet
was set to offer design tools from Cadence Design Systems Inc.

Tom, don't forget that Intel is paranoid as per their Chairman Andy Grove. At least they're proactively going out to find out what may be in store. Hope it's not too late, though.

Tom:

That might mean our stock prices will soar. After all if there will
be a fab destroyed here, a fab out of commission there, fewer operating fabs everywhere, ASPs might go up (LSI signs those pricing contracts so it may not be a boon to LSI) and the survivors rake in the dough...

Remember that fire in the far east some years back and what it did to DRAM prices (even if they used it as an excuse there were several tens of millions made during that 'emergency').

So if there is a Y2K snafu while the semi-cycle is booming maybe the American companies or whoever will use it an excuse to bump up prices...

Evil minds.
