U.S. oil drilling rig count up 16, Canada up 59
NEW YORK, May 28 (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States rose 16 from last week to stand at 534 as of May 28, and down from 822 a year ago, oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 12 to 411, while rigs working offshore gained three to 106. The number of rigs active in inland waters gained one to 17.

The Gulf of Mexico rig count rose three to 104.

The number of rigs searching for gas rose 24 to 404, and the number of rigs searching for oil lost eight to 130.

There were no miscellaneous rigs, unchanged from last week.

There were 157 rigs exploring directionally, 30 exploring horizontally, and 347 exploring vertically.

In Canada, the number of working rigs rose 59 from the previous week to 106, compared with 201 a year ago.

The states with the largest change in their rig count were Texas, which gained 11, Wyoming, which gained four, and Oaklahoma, which lost nine.

The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas.
