The real question is why would I pay $3000 or whatever for an Iridium phone if I thought the company was about to fold? Is this likely to be a major impediment to them increasing subscriber numbers?

Subsidy of initial customers:

Has there been any discussion regarding Iridium subsidizing subscribers to built a customer base, say, with a trial deal? There is an obvious trade-off between initial revenue vs complete failure.
