..priceline.com customers saved an average of 54% to 67% over fares ... PRICELINE.COM DELIVERS SAVINGS FOR FLEXIBLE TRAVELERS IN SIDE-BY -Side Price Comparison Business & Travel Editors, Airline Writers STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1999--In a recent comparison of airline and hotel room prices available through various travel suppliers, priceline.com found that travelers who were willing to be flexible in their travel planning saved money by naming their own price through priceline.com. In a side-by-side comparison of airline ticket prices, priceline.com customers saved an average of 54% to 67% over fares available from major airlines, an average of 41% to 59% over fares quoted by an online travel agency for any airline and an average of 21% to 44% over fares quoted by an airline ticket consolidator for any airline. In a similar comparison of hotel room prices, priceline.com customers saved an average of 24% to 56% over rates quoted by the hotel and an average of 18% to 52% over rates quoted by a hotel reservation service. Consumers who use priceline.com's travel services save money by agreeing to be flexible in return for naming their price. For example, with the company's leisure airline ticket service travelers agree to fly on any major airline willing to accept their price. The airline releases fully confirmed seats on flights where it has empty seats that depart between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Flights may be non-stop, or they may include a maximum of one connection each way. Tickets purchased through the service are non-changeable and non-refundable. "Priceline.com's travel services are a win/win/win for consumers, airlines and hotels," said Richard Braddock, priceline.com's chairman and CEO. "These results demonstrate that consumers who are willing to trade flexibility for savings can achieve meaningful discounts. What's more, airlines and hotels fill seats and rooms that would otherwise go empty and can do so without disrupting their retail pricing structure." *T Analysis of Leisure Airline Tickets ----------------------------------- Originating and Travel Dates Available Quoted Quoted priceline.com Destination (Saturday Fare for Fare Fare sales for 75% Region/City Stay/ Major for from of priceline No Saturday Airline Internet Consol- buyers Stay) (telephone)Travel idator (major Agency (any airlines) (any airline) airline)(telephone) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major Northeastern May 22-26 $1,906 $519 $285 $183-$250 city to Los Angeles (Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rocky Mountains May 24-28 $490 $358 $358 $157-$223 city to San (No Saturday Francisco stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major northwest May 18-21 $1,916 $1,265 $663 $183-$265 city to NYC (No Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Midwestern city June 20-24 $1,361 $518 $210 $191-$210 to Miami (No Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major midwestern May 31-June 2 $326 $346 $346 $145-$254 city to Los Angeles (No Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major southwestern June 1-20 $372 $371 $273 $187-$192 city to Chicago (Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major northeastern May 31-June 5 $2,012 $750 $357 $152-$324 city to San (No Saturday Francisco stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major northeast June 7-11 $170 $170 $179 $126-$169 city to Orlando (No Saturday stay required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Major northeastern June 8-15 $390 $397 $285 $153-$281 city to San (Saturday stay Francisco required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rocky Mountains June 6-20 $459 $350 $375 $182-$248 city to major (Saturday stay east coast city required) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Price comparisons were made by priceline.com on May 17 & 18, 1999. There is never a charge to make a purchase request through priceline.com. Priceline.com collects consumer demand and then presents it to sellers who can fill as much of that demand as they want at price points determined by buyers. Priceline.com is one of the Internet's truly "virtual" businesses. By taking consumer offers directly to sellers, the company doesn't hold or handle any inventory, and thus has no need for brick-and-mortar warehouses.
