i believe that an awful lot of unsuspecting people actually go out and purchase a new mouse when cleaning the old one would've sufficed. and you can't really rely upon a salesperson to suggest cleaning, even if they suspect that is all it requires.

i remember the first time i encountered that ring of gunk wrapped neatly around the rollers... i thought it was some sort of felt washer that was meant to be there for tracking or something! i use a toothpick to gently break it lose, then pull it out in a long string.
