<<Maybe this a dumb question, but, when an oil company drills for gas or oil, do they save the core?>>

Good question - but you are out of luck. Oil companies don't usually core drill. They just want to get thru that surface stuff as quick as possible. They grind it all up in the process and it ends up in a messy pile. Plus they move so fast they don't have time for screwing around on a lark. Drilling for oil and gas is BIG money. It is pretty easy to spend several million bucks drilling one simple hole. JP
