f - He makes some good points but 1 - Alpha has better java performance than Sun 2 - Alpha does have much better performance than Sun at a lower price We are still seeing the residual effect of DEC's weakness in the Alpha market - CPQ will certainly give sun a run for its money. Especially if Sun continues the poor execution they have shown on engineering for both the SPARC chip and the Solaris upgrades to support the UE10000. There are lots of games which can be played around pricing, but on metrics like cost per transaction on standard benchmarks, the Alpha systems are about 60% of Sun's numbers. The Sun guys like to ignore any segment of their market where they are not competitive, but workstations have been Sun's bread and butter and they are less and less competitive there.
