But do you really think an IP only company can survive for a long long time? I don't. I really believe that even 'workable ideas' are a dime a dozen or maybe a dollar a dozen. But without some way to completely milk that idea you will soon be an also-ran over the longer term. A decent example maybe LSI's very own new DSP acquisition - ZSP. It looks like ZSP has a good 'workable idea' but would the company have survived on its own up against TXN and MOT/LU and ADI - I'm not so sure.

As to everyone owning fabs realize that the only way these countries can do this sort of thing is if they have access to cheap capital. Even if the country subsidizes it at some point someone (say the country itself) has to pay the piper. The ASIAN fiasco showed that the Piper can come in at unexpected times and it will.

As to LSI, I'm pretty certain LSI had the 3 big markets even when they were just an ASIC supplier. Thanks to Symbios they got storage components and a bigger 'storage semis'. So that's 5. And LSI split their comm division into networking and wireless. This was true as of last year. So 4.5 were already there and 1.5 were bought. LSI did not pull of as much of a miracle transformation as these experts are suggesting. More likely what we are seeing is the ramping up of previously won design-ins and the accumulation of all that R&D effort. LSI has said since 1995 it is CoreWare CoreWare CoreWare. People (the Street) did not believe it and wanted to see the 'money' to back it up. The money is coming.
