WinTV Theater and Wave Direct package

I got to CompUSA just before it closed last (Friday) night. They had four WaveEnabled WinTV Theater cards. They were received in inventory on Thursday but only placed for sale on Friday. I was apparently the first person to purchase one.

The package comprises two boxes shrinkwrapped as one. They share the same height (20 cm) and depth (8 cm). The Hauppauge box is longer (32 cm vs. 13.5 cm). By external appearances they are entirely independent. Neither bears any reference to the other. The Hauppauge box gives no indication that it carries Wave's chip. The Wave Direct box could just as well be paired with another type of add-in card, a dongle, some other peripheral, or even a PC.

Inside the Wave Direct box are: (1) a CD bearing the software for the Wave Direct Desktop; (2) seven CDs bearing WaveEnabled content; and (3) documentation that, although it acknowledges its pairing in this instance with a Hauppauge tuner card, is readily adaptable to a pairing with some other "WaveEnabled device."

I have only eyeballed the circuit board. There is silicon with a juggler on it. That chip measures 1 cm squared. What a beautiful sight.

On page 14 of its 16-page advertising insert in the Sunday edition of the Washington Post, CompUSA devotes a 2"x3" space to a picture of, and a rebate offer for, the WinTV Theater and Wave Direct package. It is now $150 after a $20 mail-in rebate (from Hauppauge, I presume). The only allusion to Wave is in the picture of the package. Beyond the picture and pricing information, colorful ad copy touts a "Home Theater on Your PC!"

I have yet to install the tuner card. Perhaps more later.

Best wishes,
